Dec 2024 - The Moments We Remember

Sofi, uninjured

When people ask what makes Superniños special, it's tempting to talk about literacy gains, leadership programs, or the thousands of hours of learning that take place each year.

Those things matter.

But when we look back on a year, what we remember most are often the moments.

One of those moments came during Paraguay's patriotic parade.

Just days before the event, Sofi—a dedicated Kid Teacher—fell at school and injured her leg badly enough to need crutches. She was heartbroken. Like many children, she had been looking forward to the parade for weeks and didn't want to miss it.

On the day of the event, she asked her parents to take her anyway.

And so she marched.

Crutches and all.

As she moved down the parade route alongside her teammates, spectators applauded and families cheered. What could have been a disappointment became something much more powerful. Her determination reminded everyone watching that leadership isn't always about standing in front. Sometimes it's simply about showing up when it would be easier not to.

Another favorite memory came during Group A's Talent Show.

For some students, performing in front of a crowd was every bit as intimidating as marching in a parade on crutches. Yet when the day arrived, the youngest participants took the stage with a rock-and-roll dance routine that quickly won over the audience. The room filled with laughter, applause, and encouragement. Some children danced. Some sang. Some stepped onto a stage for the very first time.

Every one of them showed courage.

Moments like these don't appear in annual reports. They aren't captured by attendance numbers or test scores. Yet they are often where the deepest growth happens.

Confidence grows when a child discovers they can do something they once thought impossible. Belonging grows when classmates cheer one another on. Resilience grows when disappointment is met with determination instead of defeat.

At the end of the year, one of our partner school leaders reflected on the impact of the program, sharing that Superniños had become "a great pillar for our students."

We were honored by those words. But when we think about what that support looks like, we think of moments like Sofi's walk through the parade, a nervous child stepping onto a stage, or a room full of students cheering for one another.

Years from now, many children won't remember every lesson they learned.

But they will remember how they felt.

And those are the moments we remember too.
